Company Profile and Strategic Location
Established as a pivotal supplier of quarry aggregates in Western Romania, ECONSA GRUP SA operates from its headquarters in Sat Zam, Comuna Zam, DN7, NR. CARIERA - 264, Judetul Hunedoara. The company specializes in the full spectrum of activities from the exploration and exploitation of quarry stone to its processing and selling, primarily serving road and railway infrastructure projects across the country.
Robust Quarry Facilities and Geological Assets
ECONSA GRUP SA owns and operates a significant basalt quarry in the locality of Zam, with the extraction site easily accessible via the DN7 (E68) highway and the Deva-Arad railway, about 0.3 km off the main road following the Almașu Valley towards Cerbia. The quarry is situated in a geomorphological context of the hilly alignments along the Mureș corridor, close to the southern border of the Drocea/Metaliferi Mountains. The quarry exploits a diverse basalt complex comprising effusive rocks like basalts and anamesites, utilized extensively in construction and infrastructural works.
Diverse and Specialized Product Portfolio
ECONSA GRUP SA operates in the rich geological setting of Zam, where extensive basalt deposits are utilized for various construction purposes. The types of basalt extracted include:
1. Normal Basalt: These are massive, compact, and hard rocks, displaying colors from gray-green to reddish or blackish hues. They feature an ophitic to intersertal structure with a massive, unoriented texture.
2. Pillow-Lava Basalt (Basaltic Rocks with Spherical Cores): These microcrystalline, compact, and hard rocks break with a splintery fracture and are gray to black with greenish tints due to chloritization.
3. Vacuolar Basalt: These basalts show limited development with numerous irregularly shaped and sub-centimeter-sized vacuoles, lined with iron oxides or secondary minerals like silica, chlorite, calcite, epidote, zeolites, and pyrite.
4. Limonitized Basalt: Found at the upper part of the deposit, these basalts have undergone intense oxidation processes. The rocks are heavily limonitized on cleavage surfaces, and the oxidation process has penetrated deep into the rock mass, affecting the first 5-7 meters of depth.
Applications and Technical Usage of Materials from Zam Quarry:
The basalt from the Zam quarry, classified under technical class “A”, is utilized for a variety of construction purposes, highlighting its versatility and essential role in infrastructure development. The materials are used in:
• Raw stone for riprap and embankments, suitable for all technical classes of roads.
• Foundation layers made from large stones, applicable across all road technical classes.
• Paving for roads, streets, and embankments, for all road technical classes.
• Large crushed stone (sizes 63-80) for foundation layers for all road technical classes.
• Large crushed stone (sizes 40-63) for base layers of macadam for all road technical classes.
• Base layers of penetrated and semi-penetrated macadam, for all road technical classes.
• Crushed stone (split, sizes 8-16, 31) for foundation layers for technical road classes.
• Base layer of macadam mixed with bituminized split, penetrated macadam, semi-penetrated macadam, and natural aggregates stabilized with hydraulic or puzzolanic binders, for all road technical classes.
• Crushed stone additive (sizes 25-40) for high-strength cement concrete coverings for all road technical classes.
• Screenings (sizes 0-8 and 0-16, 25) for foundation layers for all road technical classes.
• Base layers for all technical classes of roads.
• Surface layers made of penetrated and semi-penetrated macadam, for all road technical classes.
• Screening for base layers of bituminous mixes for all road technical classes.
• Base layers of penetrated and semi-penetrated macadam, for all road technical classes.
• Cement concrete pavements, for all road technical classes.
• Bituminous coatings, for all road technical classes.
• Bituminous treatments, for all road technical classes.
• Very thin cold bituminous layers, for all road technical classes.
These diverse applications underscore the essential role of ECONSA GRUP SA’s basalt materials in supporting and advancing Romania’s infrastructure, catering to a wide array of construction and engineering needs.
Geographical and Administrative Details
The Fantanele Est extraction perimeter administratively falls under the jurisdiction of Fantanele commune, positioned between the towns of Fantanele and Frumuseni, along the left bank of the minor channel of the Mures River. The operational site is demarcated by landmarks CSA 92 – 93 along the Mures cadastral axis, on the left side of the dynamic axis. Access to the site is provided via county road DJ 682 Arad – Lipova, which features a side road about 2 km from Fantanele (heading towards Lipova), followed by an approximately 5 km dirt road.
Operations and Resource Management
The land involved in the extraction operations covers an area of 0.104 km² within the minor channel of the Mures River and is managed by A.N. Apele Romane Tg. Mures – S.G.A. Arad. The site’s operational depth reaches up to 6 meters, adhering strictly to the permits issued by the National Administration “Apele Romane” Arad Water Management System.
Product Processing and Granulometric Classes
Following the washing and sorting processes at Fantanele Est, the aggregates obtained are classified into several granulometric classes: 0 – 4 mm, 4 – 8 mm, 8 – 16 mm, 16 – 31.5 mm, and 31.5 – 70 mm. These aggregates are stored in separate depots facilitated by four conveyor belts designated for the 4 – 8 mm, 8 – 16 mm, 16 – 31.5 mm, and 31.5 – 70 mm assortments.
